What is a Word Processor?

A word processor is a software or a device that allows users to create, edit, and print documents. It enables you to write text, store it electronically, display it on a screen, modify it by entering commands and characters from the keyboard, and print it. such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or Open Office Writer.

What is MS Word?



Microsoft Word is a word processing software developed by Microsoft. It was first released on October 25, 1983, under the name Multi-Tool Word for Xenix systems.MS word helps to make professional write-ups, edit, and format the existing documents. It also helps in creating graphical documents comprising images, and more. Millions of office workers, students, and home users to create, read and edit documents use this software program. It can also be useful to familiarize yourself with the basic features and characteristics of the application.

How to Open MS word? 

  1. Click the Start button. Type "word" without quotes into the inquiry box. Click "Microsoft Word " in the rundown that shows up.
  2. Click the Start button. Float the mouse pointer over "All Programs." Scroll down to the Microsoft Office folder and snap it. Select "Microsoft Word ."

Components of a word processor /  MS word





  • Office button -The office button is located on the top-left corner of Office programs, namely Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc. The button is attached with the ribbon and is identified by a circle containing an Office logo inside it. The Office button replaces the traditional File menu of most Windows programs.
  • Quick Access Toolbar -  It is right of the Microsoft Office Button. By default, this toolbar displays the Save, Undo, and Repeat buttons, but you can customize the toolbar
  • Title bar - The title bar displays the name of the active document. At the right end of the title, the bar is the three familiar buttons that have the same function in all Windows programs. We can temporarily hide the Word window by clicking the Minimize button, adjusting the size of the window with the Restore Down/Maximize button, and closing the active document or exit Word with the Close button. The title bar displays the name of the active document. 

  •  Ribbon tab  - It is below the title bar is the Ribbon, which makes all the capabilities of Word available in one area so that we can work efficiently with the program. It is represented as buttons on the tabs that make up the Ribbon. The Home tab is active by default. Clicking one of the other tabs, such as Insert, displays that tab’s buttons. 
  •  Microsoft Office Word -The Microsoft Office Word Help button appears at the right end of the Ribbon. Across the bottom of the program window, the status bar gives information about the current document. We can turn on or off the display of an item of information by right-clicking the status bar to display the Customize Status Bar menu, and then clicking that item. 

 Features of MS Word 

1. Using the word you can create the document and edit them later, as and when required, by adding more text, modifying the existing text, deleting/moving some part of it. 

2. Changing the size of the margins can reformate a complete document or a part of the text. 

3. Font size and type of fonts can also be changed. Page numbers and header and footer can be included. 

4. Spelling can be checked and corrections can be made automatically in the entire document. Word count and other statistics can be generated. 

5. Text can be formatted in columnar style as we see in the newspaper. Text boxes can be made. 

6. Tables can be made and included in the text. 

7. Word also allows the user to mix the graphical picture with the text Graphical picture can either be created in the word itself or can be imported from outside like from the clip art gallery. 

8. Word also provides the mail-merge facility. 

9. Word also has the facility of macros. Macros can be either attached to some function/special keys or to a toolbar or to a menu. 

10. It also provides online help of any option.

11. MS WORD offers a very easy and flexible environment to work in.
